re: Celebrate 4th of July with a Book!

Dear Readers…

I celebrate every holiday with a book. It can be one I read myself, or that I share with my sons. Today my family celebrates the American Dream with Janet S. Wong’s picture book Apple Pie Fourth of July, stunningly illustrated by Caldecott Honoree Margaret Chodos-Irvine.  “Chow mien in our kitchen. / Chow mien! / Chinese food on the Fourth of July? / No one wants Chinese food / on the fourth of July, I say. / Fireworks are Chinese, Father says, / and hands me a pan full of sweet-and-sour pork.” Read on to hear why this book is particularly special to me as an editor.

I often read Apple Pie Fourth of July aloud in picture book workshops. Janet has a visual approach to her poetry, making sure it not only sounds right to her ears but lays on the page rhythmically and with brilliant use of page turns for extra beats and drama. Her poetry is perfect for the picture book format. I was an assistant when Janet published this book; my boss was her main editor. Working on this book drove home the importance of page break timing in picture books. Then Margaret Chodos-Irvine swooped in with images that lifted Janet’s poetry, helping it soar as vibrantly as any firework. Read it, feel it, enjoy. Happy 4th of July!
